Before visiting Crete I had heard a lot of positive things and had even read a book based on the area which I massively recommend to anyone, but especially if you are going to Crete (The Island, by Victoria Hislop).

Much like a lot of Greece, Agia Pelagia is extremely picturesque and although not as lively as some other areas of Greece, it didn't disappoint. On our trip we didn't travel much outside of the close areas as we were looking for a relaxing holiday with a little too much sunbathing and not enough exploring. But we did venture down to the main town, which from our hotel was around a 20 minute walk. If you enjoy walking and don't mind some steep hills, this walk can be a real pleasure, as you are given complete panoramic views of the island if you are as high up as our hotel was based. We were right on top of a huge mountain so as you can imagine, we were treated to some amazing views.

The main town offers a whole variety of restaurants, café's and bars to choose from as you walk along side the beach. As you reach the end of this stretch you can take a turn in to the main town where you can find row upon row of small local businesses that are filled with brilliant finds. This was something I personally loved about this place, the locals were extremely friendly and none of the businesses were chain brands as you can now see in so many places you visit. I really enjoyed visiting shops I wouldn't find anywhere else.

The one thing I would say about this particular area of Crete, is that we weren't overwhelmed by the beaches. The beach we did go to next to the restaurants wasn't anything too special and was very crowded with both locals and tourists, however I am sure that there are plenty more beaches to visit that may be a little more impressive.

If you don't fancy making the steep walk down to the beach, have no fear, public transport is always on hand to help you out. There is a shuttle bus that goes down to the main town daily, with most morning and afternoon drop offs and pick ups. Or alternatively you can always ring a taxi.

If you are looking for hotels to stay at in the area, I couldn't recommend the Panorama Village hotel enough. It is reasonably priced and rated four star, and has also been newly refurbished so you will find all of the rooms in the highest standard. The staff are so friendly and welcoming and if that's not enough for you, the main pool looks out on the most incredible views of the surrounding island.
