Sleeping bag liner - this can be very handy for long journeys on sleeper trains or buses. Either to use as something to lie on or to actually sleep in. They are thin enough so that you won’t get too warm if the weather is particularly hot.

Pillow case cover - this is more of a comfort thing. It is completely optional and not really all that necessary, however, if you want a little piece of home with you it can be handy to bring with you and then use instead of the pillow cases that hostels provide. Also, for hygiene reasons, if you would feel more comfortable knowing you can wash your own pillow case and take it to each hostel you stay in.
Waterproof cover for backpack - it is obviously important that you keep your backpack nice and dry to avoid damaging any of your belongings. Having a waterproof cover is really useful when you have to throw it in with lots of other luggage in the compartments under sleeper buses or trains.

Plastic bag for washing - bringing a plastic bag is a good idea for putting your dirty washing in it. It separates your dirty laundry from the rest of your clean clothes.
Trainers - if you are planning on doing a lot of walking or hiking, trainers or walking shoes are a must. These will save you from getting your feet dirty if your only other option is sandals. Get a fairly good quality pair to avoid them from damaging easily. – look at some of our trainer options on our gift guide.
Sliders/flip flops/sandals – in hot weather you will be in need of some shoes that are going to give you a bit of air. Whether that’s flip flops, sliders or Birkenstocks, they are all good options for causal day-to-day outings.

Floaty trousers – trousers that are going to give you a bit of air and aren’t tightly fitted are a really good idea when travelling. Don’t go overboard on the amount you buy before you jet off though. Depending on where you are going, there is usually a lot of markets and shops where you can buy trousers and other clothing for a good price.
Baggy t-shirts – again, don’t go overboard on the amount you take as there are washing machines at the vast majority of hostels so you can always freshen them up when they need it. Opt for a baggy style that isn’t too tight fitting to ensure you are comfy.
Toiletries – it’s a good idea to take a big toiletries bag so all of your things are together. An even better idea might be to get your hands on a clear, see-through bag so that you don’t have to search for ages for the item you require.

Chargers – universal adapters are needed when you go travelling. Some plugs on certain electricals have a European outlet as well as a UK outlet. However, it’s best to check before. These are available online or in certain stores and if you are cutting it close, you can always buy one from the airport.
