Let’s face it, the idea of travelling on your own in a foreign country can be terrifying, let alone being a woman on top of that. If something goes wrong, you have to deal with the issue on your own, and can’t rely on your friends or family being with you to sort it out. There are endless benefits of travelling alone, including discovering and learning more about yourself and what you want in your life. However, sometimes you will need a support system when you are hundreds of miles from home, and we have made it easier for you to meet people whilst travelling solo.
1. Stay in hostels
The majority of people stay in hostels when they are travelling as 9 times out of 10 they are the cheapest form of accommodation. What a lot of people don’t realise is how many amazing people they will encounter whilst staying at hostels and how this is a really easy way of making new friends. Lots of good hostels will have boards in their communal area which will have different day trips, as well as nights out planned which you can tag along to.
Boards game night are also a thing at quite a few hostels, where anyone is free to join in. This is also a great opportunity to meet and interact with new people.
2. Take a tour
You will most likely participate in a tour whilst on your travels, whether that be just for a day, or longer. All the people on the tour will be tourists, just like you, and therefore this is another way to meet new people. Another great thing about tours is that the people who you’re on the tour with will have similar interests to you, and therefore are good candidates for new friends.
3. Travel forums
There are loads of travel forums online where different travellers share their advice and tips as well as using site to meet up with different people who are in the same destination as them. These are really great as everyone on the forum is super friendly and also on there for the same reason as you – to meet new people!
4. Become a volunteer
Volunteering is a really popular way of travelling and is an incredible way of visiting different destinations all over the world. Lots of people often volunteer alone and therefore also looking to meet new friends and socialise. You will also meet loads of amazing locals who will be more than happy to show you their different culture.
5. Go to bars
Talking to new people in bars can be easier than normal, with the aid of alcohol giving you a new found confidence. Check out popular bars on travel websites such as tripadvisor before you go and see where the best places to go are. Be careful as to not drink too much when you are in a foreign place, but have fun at the same time. Find your nearest bar here.
