1. Do your research – You need to know what to expect before you travel. Read up on your destination through different online forums, such as tripadvisor. Not only will this leave you feeling prepared for your travels, but you will also feel more confident about travelling alone.

2. Booking accommodation in advance – even if you only book accommodation for the first night, this is really important in relation to staying safe. If you get off your flight with nothing booked and find out all the local hostels are full, you are putting yourself in danger. You can easily book hostels online for hundreds of different countries on hostelworld. Make sure you keep the address of where you are staying written down so you can ask for help locating it if you get lot.

3. Take out a travel insurance policy – in most cases, you will find that you don't actually use the travel insurance, and it could seem like a waste of money. However, if the worst case scenario does happen, and you end up in hospital with an injury, this could result in you having to pay a LOT of money. Check the policy to mak sure it is legit and covers costs such as paying for a flight home if you need to get back urgently. GoCompare allows you to compare a variety of different travel insurance policies, seeing which one would best suit you.

4. Only pack essentials – When you go travelling, you are not blessed with the luxury of loads of luggage. Most of the time you have a rucksack to carry around with everything squashed inside. Only pack the bare essentials; this includes making a checklist of what you are going to take. Don't overload on clothes, you will find that a few shirts are sufficient along with a few pairs of trousers of shorts. You will be able to wash clothes while you are travelling, so don't go over the top.

5. Be smart – this is one of the most important points of all. Make sure that you keep valuables hidden always, as you never know who is eyeing up your fancy camera or smartphone. Don't put yourself in any dangerous situations, if your gut is telling you something isn’t right, then remove yourself from the situation and fine a safe refuge such as returning to your hostel. Appear confident even if you feel far from it, criminals are more likely to target you if you appear vulnerable, so keep your head held high.
